High Value Targeted Spring Cleaning

As we tackle the tasks for spring cleaning, it’s important to not get overwhelmed. These tasks should be completed per routine frequency and more than just once per year. Pinpoint what needs to get cleaned in your living space but just know you are making positive changes, one task at a time. If your budget allows, you can also outsource these tasks.

Declutter your living space often. Don’t start in an obscure place like a closet; perhaps the mudroom, vestibule, entrance hallway or kitchen.

Frequency: Monthly

Fridgescaping starts with cleaning the interior. Is it time to throw out that 5 year old bottle of salsa? Let’s start by identifying these expired items and do have a garbage can nearby. Make space on your counter to set items aside that are good. Fill that sink up with warm soapy water and let’s begin with taking a few photos to remember where the shelves & drawers belong. In warm weather the large components can be taken outdoors or in a pre-cleaned bathtub, otherwise the sink can be used. Once the shelves & drawers are cleaned, allow to air dry while the interior is cleaned. Reassemble and as you place food products back in, give them a quick wipe down. With both the interior and exterior wiped down, please consider the refrigerator coils in the rear motor area. These coils collect hair and dust and could lead to a fire hazard. Cleaning the dust can increase the efficiency and possibly be the remedy as to why your refrigerator is making loud noises or buzzing sounds.

Frequency: 2 times/year

Range hood filters are often ignored until they stop functioning or even worse, when they catch fire and it’s too late. Pop out the filter(s) and run them through the dishwasher or allow them to soak in warm soap water and scrub lightly. You may try degreaser but just know you will need hot water to remove the grease as it gels up. If they are foul, unserviceable and impacted with grease, these can also be replaced. Also note that charcoal filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced.

Frequency: Check every other month

Dishwashers should be run weekly to prevent the hoses from decay/dry rot. Check your owners manual for specifics. Some filters pop out easily while others require a screwdriver. Along with proper maintenance and to prevent mold & mildew, use vinegar to eliminate bacteria and baking soda to absorb odors. Remove racks, spray arms and filters: soak in warm soapy water.

Frequency: Every 3 months

AC/Heating filters are an integral factor in indoor air quality. Strike up a conversation with your ac/heating contractor next time they service your home with any efficiency questions you may have. Change filters winter, spring, summer and fall depending on your location and if you have pets at home, this is an important consideration.

Frequency: 1-3 months

Drains are the cause of many noxious odors. Use 1/2 cup baking soda & 1 cup white vinegar to pour down the drain; you may use a funnel. You’ll notice fizzing as the reaction begins. Cover the drain with a stopper or washcloth and wait between 15-30 minutes. Flush with hot water. This may also unclog minor issues but also note that this can corrode older pipes over time.

Frequency: Every 3 months
