AA Adequate - Bed Bug Lottery

Illustrated cartoon version of a bed bug.

I’ve often thought that nothing good comes out of social media because it takes us away from the outdoors and reinforces the masses to stay attached to our handheld devices. But in reality, it’s not the device, it’s our lack of self control. Citizen reporters (and perturbed employees) are one aspect of social media that acts as an important factor which shapes our worldview; “I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another” that American Airlines was messin around…and has bed bugs.

I’m not much of a flier aboard airplanes (I used to jump out of them in the Army) but if you are, continue reading; this story is for you.

In the U.S. 12% of people take two thirds (66 percent) of all flights. While it’s fair to say that customer service is an important aspect of our satisfaction, one can only imagine how service providers are treated by management.

American Airlines (AAL) has a market cap of $7.82 Billion USD. $31.4 million is the total compensation of the AA CEO which largely is performance based.

Startling images have now been released of crew rooms that employees use in between flights. As a consumer, we believe the customer comes first but have we thought about how service providers are treated by upper level management? In these dimly lit crew rooms, you will find broken and moldy ceiling tiles, broken furniture, dirty bathrooms and bed bugs to name a few. Yes, bed bugs that will follow the crew to board another flight which will certainly attach themselves to the lucky passengers. We’re always winning….more winning please and thank you.

In terms of cost of repair, please read above to the CEO performance based pay. Instead of developing an action plan with timely monitoring, they react. Does AA have a head of facilities in each airport? Who does he/she report to? These maintenance repairs will come straight out of margin, instead of a realistic budget which would lessen their stock price.

If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it, unless it becomes an embarrassment. In the meantime, you can’t find me on social media but instead, splitting firewood outdoors.
